Work experience
Independent Software Development Projects, Thornton, CO
- Use AI coding tools as development partners for implementation, debugging, code review, research, and learning while personally validating behavior, testing results, and making technical decisions.
- Built custom Pine Script indicators used live in personal futures trading, translating trading rules into executable logic and iterating through testing and refinement.
- Built a C# integration bridge connecting TradingView webhook alerts with NinjaTrader 8 for personal automated trade execution, working with REST endpoints, asynchronous processing, error handling, and platform integration.
- Developing additional full-stack and local AI projects to rebuild hands-on development depth and expand experience with current tools and practices.
City of Westminster, Westminster, CO
July 2013 to September 2024
- Led a team of four developers delivering applications and technology solutions for City departments and the public while remaining responsible for technical direction and delivery.
- Helped modernize the team's development environment by implementing Azure DevOps and moving from primarily individual application ownership toward collaborative team development practices.
- Directed a technology-stack transition toward a .NET Web API backend and Vue.js frontend, establishing a more current foundation for future application development.
- Managed hiring, mentoring, workload priorities, code quality expectations, and stakeholder communication during periods of significant staffing constraints.
- Worked as a full-stack developer in an environment where individual engineers generally owned applications end to end, from requirements and design through development, troubleshooting, deployment, and ongoing support.
- Built and maintained department-specific web applications and backend systems, learning unfamiliar technologies independently as project needs required and delivering reliable solutions with limited formal training time.
- Rewrote the City's online sales tax filing and payment application for local businesses, replacing a legacy VBScript app with ASP.NET Web Forms and building an API that connected it to the City's Rocket UniVerse (MultiValue) database through a vendor REST interface.
- Strengthened the flat-file data exchange with the City's bank, which had no API, closing gaps when file delivery failed or file data was bad, and supported the application in production.
- During COVID, after the sales tax system's original developer had left the City, worked through 40 years of Pick code to piece together sales tax data the CFO urgently requested.
- Rewrote the public sign-up app for the City's Santa visit program and, after studying how the program was run, proposed and built a full admin back end for the firefighters who ran it, replacing spreadsheets and manual reminder calls with random lottery selection, sign-up and selection-status notifications, and automated first and second reminders; later reworked the whole app when the program moved from a lottery to time-slot sign-ups.
- Wrote test plans and ran user acceptance testing with department staff before releases where warranted.
- Maintained systems supporting the City's public website and intranet, including its DotNetNuke (DNN) content management system, and served as technical liaison among departments, vendors, and IT.
- Evaluated technologies and practical solutions for business needs while balancing development with production support, requirements gathering, and other technical responsibilities.
